Top 5 Steps for Creating a Capsule Wardrobe

A capsule wardrobe is a great way to manage your fashion style and has so many advantages. By limiting your seasonal wardrobes to a number of items, you are saving space, money, time putting together outfits, and really honing in on and defining your own fashions style.

But as the average American woman owns about 90 items of clothing, it can be a little daunting to reduce that number to create a functional capsule wardrobe.

Step # 1 Plan Your Capsule Wardrobe's structure

Your fist step is to plan what clothing you will need for the season. Typical capsule wardrobes contain about 25-40 items of clothing.  A great way to figure out how many pieces of clothing you will need, is to do a breakdown on the types of clothing you will need, and decide you will keep 3 items of each, with one jacket that will be your focal point.

For example:

Shoes: 3 pairs of flats, 3 pairs of heels, 3 pairs of boots.
Pants: 3 pairs of jeans, 3 pairs of shorts, 3 skirts.
Tops: 3 button down shirts, 3 t shirts, 3 sweaters, 3 tank tops
Dresses: 3 dresses
Jacket: 1 jacket

Total wardrobe: 34 items

You will want to adapt this plan to your personal fashion needs.

Step # 2 Empty and Sort your Wardrobe

Now that you have a plan, you need to empty your entire wardrobe. Everything. Yes, we are recommending for you to make a huge mess and pile all of your clothing on your bed. Now, you will sort your clothing into pile. Caroline Rector from un-fancy.com, recommends 4 sorting piles:

LOVE IT

Place only items you love and would wear right now in this pile.

MAYBE

In this pile, put outfits that you like, and don't want to get rid of right now.

NOPE

Yeah, nope. What were you thinking? In this pile, place the items that you just don't like or that you just would never wear for whatever reason. This will include items you love or like but that just don't fit you properly. Do yourself a favor and donate or sell this pile right away. No point in holding on to these items.

SEASONAL

This pile will contain items you love or are a maybe but are not in season right now.

Step # 3 Test out your Love It pile.

Store your seasonal and maybe piles, and test out your love it pile. You should set an amount of time when you don't allow yourself anything to wear except items from your love it pile. You should also keep yourself from shopping and adding new clothes to this pile.

Step # 4 Put together your Wardrobe and Wear it Exclusively for the Season.

After having tested our your wardrobe, you will get a much better idea of which clothes you find yourself wearing more than others and which pieces your wardrobe might be missing, Put your wardrobe together according to the plan you put together in step #1 (Fine tune this plan if your test period made you feel it was necessary) and shop now for any piece your capsule wardrobe might be missing,

Wear your wardrobe exclusively, no matter how much shopping tempts you. If you've made a mistake, try to wear the item anyways, it might grow on you.

Step # 5 Learn from your mistakes, Repeat the process for each Now Season,

After wearing your capsule wardrobe for the season, start the process again for the next season. The process will get simpler as you learn your style better.
